Arthur Clarence Furchgott (1884-1971) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He married Pena Sorentrue in 1910 and had three sons, Arthur (b. 1912), Robert (b. 1916) and Max (b. 1917.) Furchgott joined Charleston's Friendship Lodge No. 9 in 1906 and served as Master from 1911-1913.
